Winter Roof Maintenance
With cool air, changing leaves and snowy winter forecasts, maintenance to your home and roof becomes necessary. Elliott Roofing has you covered with tips and free inspections to help protect your roof from possible damage during the winter season.
WHEN TO START PREPARING YOUR ROOF FOR WINTER
Try to get ahead of the cold by winter-proofing your roof in the fall. It is particularly dangerous to be on the roof with ice or snow, so do what you can now and stay on the ground when winter arrives.
HOW TO PREPARE YOUR ROOF
Look for leaves or debris building up on the roof. Be especially aware if you have a lot of trees around your home. With leaves falling and winds blowing it is easy for debris to get blown onto the roof and in the gutters. It is important to keep your roof and gutters clear.
Check that water can drain properly through the gutters. If you notice a build-up of debris and leaves, have the gutters cleaned out.
DANGERS TO YOUR ROOF IN THE WINTER
Watch for snow and ice. These are the biggest winter threats to the structure of your roof. When snow or ice accumulates on the roof it can cause an ice dam, which is a ridge of ice at the edge of a roof preventing the snow, ice or water from draining properly. Making sure your roof and gutters are clear before the ice and snow arrive can help prevent ice dams from forming.
If you do notice an ice dam, do not attempt to clear the ice or snow and never put chemicals on your roof. Contact Elliott Roofing and we can advise you on the best measures to take.
